Provide a roost for bats in your garden

The Chavenage Bat Box is a quality single-chamber nesting box designed to provide a roost for bats. As these protected mammals have lost many natural roosting sites in recent years, it offers a suitable habitat for a range of species, including Pipistrelle, Noctule, Leisler's, Natterer's, Daubenton's and Brown Long-eared bats.

Made from untreated FSC®-certified timber (FSC-C124355), the bat box is constructed from high-quality, durable timber that provides excellent insulation. The untreated wood is particularly important, as bats are sensitive to smells and may be deterred by applied treatments.

Suitable for gardens, woodland settings and house walls, the Chavenage Bat Box features a narrow entrance slot at the base, allowing access while helping to prevent predation.

Placing your bat box

Site the box high up between 2.5m and 5m on a building or mature tree using the pre-drilled back plate hanger.  Try to enusre the box receives only part sun during the day, facing South West or South East. If it is on an existing feeding or flight route, you are more likely to get an occupation.

Important information

Bats are a schedule 1 protected species under the Wildlife & Countryside Act. It is illegal for any member of the public to disturb a roost, handle or kill any bat. Therefore, only licensed bat workers can inspect Bat Boxes. However, you can monitor your bat box without disturbance, look for mouse-sized droppings beneath the box as a clue to occupation or observe from a distance at dusk to see if bats are exiting the box to hunt.
